Relevance

The relevance of the project is due to the need for efficient processing of poor and difficult-to-enrich nickel-cobalt ores and concentrates, the resources of which are widespread, but currently poorly used due to the low recoverability of metals by traditional methods. The development of an innovative integrated processing technology using pyro- and hydrometallurgical processes will significantly increase the extraction of nickel, cobalt and iron, ensuring the production of products with high added value. This is especially important for the development of the domestic metallurgical industry and increasing competitiveness in the global market.

Purpose

The aim of the project is to develop a comprehensive technology for processing poor nickel-cobalt-containing ores and concentrates using pyro- and hydrometallurgical processes, including oxidation-sulfatization firing of raw materials with further hydrometallurgical processing of the cinder and extraction of target metals (iron, nickel and cobalt) in the form of powders of these metals.

Expected and achieved results

 

The results obtained and the novelty – at this stage, the justification of the research direction has been carried out, the physico-chemical analysis of the initial ores and pyrite concentrates has been performed. Thermodynamic analysis has established that the process of leaching of the initial ores and heat-treated concentrates is possible in the pH range of 0-2.5, which ensures the transition of the base metals nickel, cobalt and iron into solution. Possible reactions of oxidation-sulfatizing firing of pyrite concentrate have been established. Based on diagrams of the state of Fe (Ni, Co)-S systems, the heat treatment conditions (700-1100 K) have been determined, at which the formation of low-sulfur iron compounds of a wide range of compositions, as well as cobalt and nickel sulfides of variable composition, is possible. The novelty of the project is the creation of an innovative integrated technology for processing poor nickel–cobalt-containing ores and pyrite nickel-cobalt-containing concentrates, which allows for the intensification of selective extraction of target metals with a high degree of purity to solve the problem of direct leaching, oxidative sulfatizing firing with further processing of productive solutions by chemical precipitation and extraction processes. The novelty of the research at this stage is to establish optimal ore leaching regimes to obtain a productive solution containing target metals in the amount of 1 g/l of nickel, 0.4 g/l and 10-12 g/l of iron from Kazakhstan's poor nickel-cobalt ore.
