Department of Petroleum Engineering

The department "Development and Operation of Oil and Gas Fields" was established in 1965 under the supervision of Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor G.A. Khalikov.

The department is the leading one in Kazakhstan and trains personnel in all specialties of the oil and gas industry for the development and operation of oil and gas fields. Over the 50-year history, the department has graduated more than 10,000 specialists for the oil and gas industry of the Republic.

In 2016, as a result of the reorganization and merger of three departments, the Department of Petroleum Engineering was organized on the basis of the Department of Development and Operation of Oil and Gas Fields.

In different years, the Department was headed by prominent scientists, professors Tolybekov B.S. Mailybaev M.M., Abishev S.K., Omarov M.O., Akhmedzhanov T.K., and Syzdykov M.K., Dairov Zh.

Since 2021, the Department is headed by Professor Yeligbayeva G.Zh.

The Department employs professors and teachers who are well known for their scientific and technical achievements in the scientific field and the oil and gas industry.

The industrial partners of the Petroleum Engineering department are the leading oil and gas companies of the world and Kazakhstan: JSC NC "KazMunayGas"; JSC NC "QazaqGaz"; LLP "Tengizchevroil"; "Eni"; "Shell Kazakhstan", "Schlumberger Lodzhelco Inc." Kazakhstan"; "Agip Karachaganak"; "KazPetroDrilling"; LLP "Baker Hughes Kazakhstan";

Since 2017, an Industrial Advisory Council (IAC) has been established at Satbayev University to provide recommendations on improving educational and administrative processes.

At the department, with the financial support of the ICS, together with the teachers of the Colorado School of Mines, an educational bachelor's degree program "Petroleum Engineering" was developed in accordance with international standards. The Petroleum Engineering educational program is currently ranked 51-100 in the QS World University ranking.

All educational programs of the Petroleum Engineering Department have been developed jointly with leading companies in the oil and gas industry and have been accredited by the International Agency for Accreditation of Educational Programs in Engineering, Computer Science, Natural Sciences and Mathematics (ASIIN) and the Independent Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (IQAA).

Leading oil companies promote the employment of graduates of the basic department in their structural divisions of the organization. To form a personnel reserve, advanced training courses are held for employees of enterprises, a branch of the department is organized in KMG Engineering LLP, on the basis of which the KMG School operates.

Students of the department take an active part in the University's academic mobility programs and study at leading universities in the world: University of Lorraine; Sains Malaysia University; Czestochowa Polytechnic University; Gyeongsang National University

Every year, undergraduates and doctoral students of the department undergo foreign internships at the best foreign universities: PennState University; Colorado School of Mines; Ufa State Petroleum Technical University; Universiti Putra Malaysia Serdang; Institute of Oil and Gas of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan; Eindhoven University of Technology; Khalifa University of Science and Technology.

 Foreign professors direct the research activities of doctoral students of the department. Together with foreign professors, scientists of the department publish textbooks and carry out joint publications.

Students of the Department of Petroleum Engineering conduct scientific research at the international level and are members of the section of the International Society of Petroleum Engineers - "SPE". The Society of Petroleum Engineers is an international organization of petroleum industry technicians. The main goal of the company is the accumulation and dissemination of knowledge in the field of oil exploration and production, the development of related technologies. More than 100 thousand people are members of SPE, including more than 28 thousand students.

Students and staff of the department regularly participate in international and regional scientific and practical conferences and forums, become fellows and win grants from leading oil and gas companies in Kazakhstan and the world.
