Scientific and methodological substantiation of the criteria for the breakthrough hazard of moraine-glacial lakes and assessment of the degree of potential risk from their breakthroughs
Project objective: is to develop scientifically based criteria for the breakthrough hazard of moraine-glacial lakes and a methodology for assessing the degree of potential risk from their breakthrough.
Relevance: Assessment of the current state of the scientific and technical problem being solved. One of the main reasons for the formation of catastrophic glacial mudflows is the breakthrough of moraine-glacial lakes. Moraine - glacial lakes are an integral part of mountain-glacial systems. They exist in all mountainous areas with modern glaciation. In Kazakhstan, these are Altai, Zhetysu Alatau, Ile Alatau, Kungei Alatau, Teriskey Alatau, Ugamsky, Talassky, Maidantalsky ridges. All these mountainous areas are very densely populated and industrially developed areas. Therefore, protection of the population and the economy from glacial mudslides is a very important task here.

Expected result: The results obtained on determining the danger of lakes in mountainous areas can become the basis for planning water management activities and assessing potential damage from floods and mudslides.
